Therapists

Ian Guy, Therapist

Ian:

I work part-time as a GP and part-time as a Therapeutic Counsellor.  I did my counselling training at The Northern Guild for Psychotherapy where I learnt Transactional Analysis and methods based on using the relationship between patient and counsellor as part of the therapy. I was awarded the Guild's Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling in 2011.

More recently I have trained in Comprehensive Energy Psychotherapy, which uses the tapping of accupressure points to gently relieve troublesome emotional symptoms, and in Eye Movement Desensitisation and Re-processing, which I use mainly for treating the symptoms of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.  I use these methods most of the time now because I find that they usually work quickly and effectively and need the patient to tell me only as much about themselves as they feel comfortable with.

I am registered with the General Medical Council and am preparing to apply for registration as a therapeutic counsellor with the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Joy Guy, Therapist

Joy:

I started my career as a specialist Medical/Psychiatric Social Worker, but decided to retrain as a Psychotherapist in the early nineties. After studying Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy I gained a Diploma in Counselling and began to work as a Psychological Therapist in a General Medical Practice.

I have been accredited as a Senior Practitioner with the British Association for Counselling & Psychotherapy since 1996 and in 2004 I gained a Postgraduate Diploma in Cognitive Behaioural Therapy [CBT] and am an accredited CBT practitoner with the British Association of Behavioural and Cognitive Psychotherapists. I also teach and supervise other psychotherapists.

After completing courses in Play Therapy and Systemic Family Therapy I work with children who are experiencing psychological distress, and with their families.

More recently I trained in Eye Movement De-sensitisation and Re-processing [EMDR] and Comprehensive Energy Psychology, both of which I use to treat Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I have completed a course in Couple Therapy run by the Tavistock Clinic and work with couples who are having difficulties in their relationship.

I have recently completed a course in Spiritual Accompaniment which was run by the Diocese of York and am available for clients who wish to work on their spiritual development.
